Searching for a new apartment has been one of THE most stressful things. When your salary doesn’t match up with the current apartment prices, you start to lack hope lol. BUTTTTTTT, I’m trying to keep the hope alive so I’ve been looking for some new apartment inspiration on Pinterest as well as buying a couple of new decor pieces that have been on sale throughout the summer (can someone say shopping addiction). A lot of people always ask me how do I start to decorate a space and the answer is pretty simple: you need to be inspired. Now I literally look for inspiration everywhere. It could be a store/restaurant design, Instagram, on TV, other people’s homes, etc. but what’s great about Pinterest is that you can keep all of the ideas in one place. I am NOTORIOUS for creating a board for every and anything that I do, so of course, I created a board on not only the look of my new apartment but also some of the things that I would want for the apartment.

It’s going to be sad leaving my first “big girl” apartment :(. I’ve had a lot of memories in here and it’s definitely a place that I will always remember. But I’m believing that God has something even better for me (and cheaper) somewhere else in Orlando. The process of moving may take a little longer than I want it to, but luckily I have a place to stay in case I don’t find a place in time. I will definitely take you guys on the journey of the new apartment and all of the cute things I’m finding for it but in the meantime, you can check out my Pinterest board for some inspiration :).

If you missed my two apartment tours on the blog, you can view them here and here.

Allow me to reintroduce myself… With a new site design and loss of a lot of my previous blog posts (still sad about that) comes some introductions. I have a lot of new followers and I realized that there’s a couple of things that you may not know about me:

  1. I’m Trinidadian – I was born in Trinidad and moved to America when I was 3 years old. My entire family is from there and it really is a HUGE part of who I am. The food, the music, the values, I love my country and I wouldn’t have it any other way.
  2. I started blogging as a school project for my English class – Blogging was something I always wanted to do but was kind of scared to start. My English professor gave us a semester-long research project and I decided to do mine on if blogging can help improve my writing (which it did btw!) so it forced me to start one. I don’t even think I can find those posts because they were on Blogspot, but that’s okay I prob wouldn’t want to see them anyway lol.
  3. I work at an advertising agency – As much as I would love blogging to be my full-time job, I actually work at an advertising agency. I have a degree is in Advertising/Public Relations with a minor in Hospitality Management so I’m lucky that I was able to get a job in the field that I studied. My main role is on the media team working on the planning and buying of media placements both offline and online. The company I work for now, I actually interned for my last semester of college and they hired me! So internships do work!
  4. Lauren Conrad is my queen – A lot of people don’t know this about me but watching The Hills is the whole reason I got into the industry that I’m in right now. I saw Lauren working in PR for People’s Revolution and working at Teen Vogue and knew that was what I wanted to do. Hence the major in Advertising/Public Relations, but then I realized how much I actually didn’t like PR and fell in love with advertising lol.
  5. I tried spaghetti for the first time a couple of months ago Super weird, I know lol! I don’t know why I’ve never tried it before, maybe because I’m not a fan of cheesy things or Italian food. My verdict: it’s alright. I’ll stick with my personal fave: Asian food.
  6. I spend WAYYYY too much time watching TV – So much time that I kind of want to do a blog post on some of my fave shows and binge-worthy series. But TV is my release, it’s a way for me to relax and not have to think about anything. From reality to documentaries to scripted, I watch it ALL.
  7. I’m waiting until marriage – Well this is a sensitive topic and I honestly wasn’t sure if I wanted to put it in here, but I do think it’s important because it’s part of who I am. I’m waiting until marriage for primarily religious reasons but personally, I felt like it was the best thing for me. It makes dating a little challenging but I think it’ll be worth it in the end.
  8. I have one sister but tons of cousins (who are basically sisters) – Even though I only have one sister (Destiny), my mom is one of nine children. So yeah… I have tons of cousins who I love so much and they are all doing pretty cool things. Destiny is 5 years younger than me and has started her own clothing line. She constantly inspires me every day. I can’t sit here and name all of my cousins because that would take forever but Shenelle is a bomb youtuber, T’shelle (my roommate) is killing it in her grad school program and Darcel has started her own blog. I come from a pretty talented family if I do say so myself.
  9. I’m addicted to Target – Yeah I know every girl says this, but I’m like really addicted. I can go there, not even buy anything and have the time of my life 😂. Just being in Target makes me happy, but chances are I do leave with things that I didn’t even know I needed. Target knows what I need before I do, it’s one of the most important relationships in my life lol.
  10. I milly rock on every block – The milly rock is my go to dance when I’m out. Why? I have no idea, but it’s not a party if I don’t milly rock lol.

Coming up with 10 things about myself was a lot harder than I thought it would be, but I hope you know a little bit more about me now. Some of the things that I mentioned might end up being their own blog posts so I can elaborate on them a little more. If there’s anything you may want to know more about, feel free to leave a comment down below, message me, or dm me on Instagram!

It’s been so hot in Florida lately. It was literally 90+ degrees the other day! With all of this hot weather comes… BEACH DAYS. I am so excited yall! I haven’t been to the beach since last summer so I am so ecstatic for my little beach getaway this weekend with a couple of my friends. As I’m packing and running around getting stuff for the weekend, I thought I would share a couple of my beach essentials.

The perfect swimsuit
There are so many different options when it comes to swimsuits. Do you guys remember when the only option was basically a triangle top and either a string or normal bikini bottom? Now there are so many choices, which doesn’t make it any easier for an indecisive person like me LOL. We have high waisted bottoms, high cut bottoms, bandeau tops, one-pieces, one shoulder tops, etc. My personal favorites have been one-pieces and high cut (very Kim K).

Sunscreen
I’ve been listening to  The Skinny Confidential’s podcast and she talks about the importance of sunscreen all of the time! Now, I’m not the best about remembering to apply it on a regular day (except my face, I always put sunscreen on my face), but when I know I’m going to be outside for long periods of time I make sure to coat myself with it. I love the spray on ones because it’s not that much of a hassle and it dries pretty quickly!

Literature
There is nothing more relaxing than reading a book or magazine on the beach. I’m not currently reading any good books but I’m definitely packing a couple of my magazines! Some of my faves are Vogue, Elle, and Condé Nast Traveler. A little inspiration and relaxation.

Accessories
Let’s face it, we all know that if we’re going to the beach we are taking tons of pictures LOL. So why not accessorize? Sunglasses, hats, beach bags, I love it all! My must have is definitely sunglasses. There are so many different styles that I go a little crazy when it comes to them LOL. I shared my collection on insta-story the other day and I may have a slight addiction. Ooops!

Slides/Sandals
My Adidas Adilette’s are usually my go-to’s when I go to the beach (and I’ll still bring them on the trip), but I got these Plaka sandals that I am slightly obsessed with! I can’t wait to wear them. They have that beachy vibe to them, but they look more like a sandal. I like that I can bring them to the beach or wear them with a cute dress. A versatile shoe is always key, especially if you’re staying at the beach for awhile.

And those are a couple of my essentials! I got some new things for the trip that I can’t wait to share. Follow along with me on Instagram to keep up with everything going on this weekend 🙂

You ever feel like you just keep experiencing the same things over and over again? It’s the same cycle; like lather, rinse and repeat? Well, that is me—NO, that was me. This year I became really tired of struggling with the same things. I picked at little things that I didn’t like about myself. I isolated myself from the people who love me. I tried to handle everything on my own and then acted like everything was all peachy when everything was actually falling apart. I was extremely hard on myself. I was extremely pessimistic. I’m a perfectionist, and I hated making mistakes so much that I’d stop myself from making any moves. Honestly, this list could go on forever, but the point of me listing these things is to show you that I was becoming my own worst enemy. I was the one getting in the way of everything that I wanted to accomplish. I was the one stopping myself from being great, and I knew something needed to change. I knew I needed to change.

Soooo I started to shift my thinking. I started being kind to myself. I started doing things for me. I focused on the things that I loved and what I wanted out of life. I started to care about Makeda. I had to sit down and ask myself some hard questions. As a 20-something, it can be hard to figure out your life. Am I the only one that feels my steps are more of a stumble than a graceful leap? LOL. We don’t have to have everything figured out, but when things aren’t going how we want them to, we have to figure out the problem and the solution. Life is too short to be unhappy with our careers, relationships, selves, etc. So 2018 is deemed the Year of Makeda, and I wanted to share a few of the things that have helped me get out of my funk.

Bring it back to the core.

Over the course of 2017, I felt like I lost God. I know that you can’t technically lose God, but it sure felt like I did. It was not a good feeling. My relationship with God is my core; for that part of me to feel like it was missing was a big factor in how I was feeling. I didn’t have anything to anchor to; no faith and no hope. When I was able to really focus on what the issue was, I learned that despite those feelings, it’s about pushing through. You got to keep praying, keep reading your Bible and keep spending time with God. Once I started to do that, things started to fall into place. I was focusing on the right things.

What’s at your core? What’s the thing that grounds and centers you? Maybe it’s meditation? Or maybe it’s something else? Whatever it is, focus on that. When our core beliefs and values are messed up, all other areas of our lives can be affected.

Go to counseling.

I want to write a whole blog post about this because I can’t tell you how much I love counseling. It is one of the best decisions I’ve made so far in my life. When people think of counseling, they think of someone going through it. Maybe an addict, someone with severe depression, etc. But you don’t need to be a severe case in order to go to counseling. Everyone should do it. It’s an eye-opening experience where you can get to the root of the problem. A counselor helps you come to conclusions on your own and prepares you with tools to help you overcome the problem. If you’re worried about the cost of counseling, there are options! Your health insurance sometimes covers counseling, or at least pays for some of it. Another option is turning to a college or a church. Many of them offer free or low-cost limited sessions for the community. Figure it out someway, somehow. I promise you won’t regret it.

Journal.

Okay, I promise I’m not just saying this, but this is another one of my best decisions, LOL, and something else that I encourage everyone to do. When you’re an over-thinker, it can be hard to figure out your thoughts. Journaling helps me make sense of everything. I get all of my thoughts out, and then there’s instant clarity and revelation on the situation. You can be as unfiltered as you need to be because there is no one there to judge you. Ever since I was a little girl, the only way I could properly express myself was through writing, so journaling is super therapeutic for me. I also practice gratitude journaling to help shift my mind to the good things going on in my life.

Find things that you enjoy.

My mom gave me great advice during my little rough patch and said that every day, I should make sure I’m doing at least one thing that I enjoy for myself. We get caught up in the day-to-day, and things start to become routine. When I realized I wasn’t taking any time for myself, I started to try to figure out what I enjoyed doing. I’m actually still figuring these things out, LOL. Whether it is going on a walk, spending time with friends, finding a hobby, developing a passion, watching your favorite show—FIND IT and DO IT! Surprisingly, I realized that I actually like nature (only to an extent, LOL). I went on a walk around a local lake with a friend, and it was one of the best things because it really relaxed me, cleared my head and kept me active all at the same time.

So that’s it! Those are some of the things that I’ve been doing, and it’s helped so much! I’m still a work in progress, but I know I’m not the only one going through these things. So if you’re also going through a season like this, I hope these things help you as much as they have helped me! 2018 is the Year of the Makeda, so make it the Year of You, too!’

Halter Crop top – Charlotte Russe / Skirt – Forever 21 / Jacket – Adidas / Purse – Forever 21 / Booties – American Eagle / Necklace – Forever 21 Athleisure is just one of those trends that I hope sticks around for a while. I was never someone that was athletic. My sister was the one that got those genes. I was the uncoordinated girl that would sit on the bench looking super cute in her uniform, so this trend was made for me lol. I’m all for trying new things when it comes to fashion, but I don’t like to sacrifice comfort. Athleisure embraces being comfortable and makes it acceptable for all settings. I swear I’ve worn this Adidas jacket to work and dressed it up with some booties to make it a little more work appropriate. Granted, I work at an advertising agency and we’re a little more lenient with the dress code, but still, it was an extremely stylish outfit.

So where do you start when it comes to Athleisure? I would start off by adding one piece to your outfit like I did with this look. The whole outfit is pretty basic but then I added this Adidas Original jacket which completely transformed it. You don’t have to go all out, just start small :). If you’re still a little intimidated, no worries! I got you! Target, T.J Maxx, and Forever 21 all have athleisure pieces or sections in their stores. They even have some pieces that play on the athleisure trend but are still very subtle. For example, Forever21 has these amazing navy trousers (that I have & absolutely LOVE) with a white tuxedo stripe down the side, that gives it a sporty vibe.

If you’re ready to work your way up, Adidas is one of those brands that’s classic but always kills it. It’s sold at a ton of places, so it’s a brand that’s extremely easy to find. I know what some of you are thinking, “Adidas is kind of out of my price range”. Let me let you in on a little secret… the boys’ section. Yes, I know it’s crazy but I actually got this jacket from the boys’ section at Adidas. I have no shame that I’m 24 years old and will still find things in the kids’ section lol! I mean think about it, am I going to pay $40+ for this jacket in the women’s’ section or am I going to pay the $23 that I got it for in the boys’ section? I’ll take $23 for $200 Alex lol If I can save money, I’m going to do it. When it comes to fashion, you have to get creative in how you style and where you get your pieces from. But regardless of whether you’re into fashion or not, I would give this trend a try. I mean what’s not to love about being comfortable and cute? 🙂

See below to shop some of my FAVORITE athleisure picks.

It has been a while. Life has been… well crazy actually. These past couple of months have been rough! I don’t know what’s been going on, but I’ve been struggling and unfortunately, blogging was put on the back burner. Without getting too much into it, a lot has been going on personally and I hope to share some of the experiences and what I’ve been learning from them with you guys in some posts to come. Welllllllll to catch you guys up, I just turned 24! If you haven’t read my blog post yet about it, drop what you’re doing and go read it! I think 24 for me is all about living my best life. Yes, I know that’s a popular thing right now, but I think everyone should want to live their best lives. People will define it differently, but for me, it’s all about not letting people and situations affect me. It’s about enjoying life and the now. So that’s how I’m trying to live my life… UNBOTHERED lol. Other than my birthday, I’ve been working my butt off at my job and really trying to strengthen my relationships with the people around me.

If you’ve been following me for a while, you might have noticed some changes. First of all, more than half of my posts are gone due to a mistake when switching my hosting site. I know, I know, I’m disappointed too 🙁 I’m going to miss having my older posts on here because I love to see how much I’ve grown as a blogger. But on the bright side, this gives me a chance to really switch it up and bring some new content for you guys. Another change is the layout. I am LIVING for the new layout! My amazing friend, Rob helped me with the identity of the site. He focused on helping me define my purpose and goals for the blog and then from there he created the brand guidelines, logo, and header. If you’re looking to rebrand or create a brand, check him out!

Along with a new layout, there’s going to be a shift in content. This blog was always primarily fashion based and I kind of want to mix it up a little bit. Don’t get me wrong I still LOVE fashion, but I also love talking about a few other things like beauty, interior design, careers, life, lol. So we’re going to start incorporating some other topics on here! If you want to hear about something specific, please let me know! I want to produce content that not only I love, but that you want to read and know more about.

There are a lot of changes happening! Even though sometimes change sucks, it gives you a chance to start fresh 🙂

Birthdays are that time of the year, where we take a moment to look back and reflect on not only the last year of our life but the last few years. We think about the milestones we’ve reached, the setbacks we’ve had, the people and experiences we’ve gained, and also the people and experiences we’ve lost. We might have had expectations for where we want to be at certain ages. Maybe we achieved them and maybe we didn’t. When I was in high school, I told myself that I wanted to be married at 24. Wowww was I wrong lol. As I am now the very young age of 24, I look back at high school me and I’m like what was I thinking? I am in no way ready for marriage. Things change lol. Your wants change. Your needs change. I think I thought that 24 was an old age, but that’s okay when you’re only 16 years old. But from 16 to 24, I’ve seen so much growth in myself and these are a couple of things that I’ve learned along the way…

  1. Trust God  – It’s the hardest thing to put into practice but the best lesson you could ever learn.
  2. Life is all about perspective – perspective literally changes everything.
  3. Have a go-to outfit – You’ll be happy for those mornings you wake up late for work and have to run out the door.
  4. Self-care, self-care, self-care – If you’re not practicing self-care, GET YOUR LIFE!
  5. A mental holiday is the best kind of holiday – Don’t be afraid to take one.
  6. Accept the unknown (still learning this one) – Sometimes things do not go as planned. You have to accept it and keep moving.
  7. Start investing in quality items – This is the time of our lives where we can be a little selfish and splurge on ourselves. My splurges lately have been on beauty items. Don’t get me wrong, I love drugstore products, but sometimes the $50 foundation is worth it 🙂
  8. If you’re constantly second guessing something, chances are you should go with your gut.
  9. Take off your makeup before you go to bed – your skin will thank you!
  10. If something/someone is making you unhappy, let it go. It’s not worth it – it REALLY isn’t worth it
  11. Where you are now, is only a season – We may feel stuck but it is just a season and seasons change.
  12. When it comes to love, be open to different possibilities – You never know who can completely rock your world if you limit your options.
  13. Take care of your body – Drink more water, exercise, the whole nine yards. I hate to exercise just as much as the next person and don’t get me started on water (I can literally go days without drinking water)! Buttttttttt ever since I started working out more regularly and drinking a ton of water, I’ve had so much more energy and I’m in the best shape of my life.
  14. Stick to who you are – Don’t change who you are for anyone. I’ve changed myself for someone before and you’re always in this state of not feeling comfortable. Don’t do it.
  15. Cook more often – it’ll save you money and it’s the best feeling when you cook something amazing for yourself. I feel so proud of myself whenever I make a really good meal 🙂
  16. Speak up for yourself – people kind of suck sometimes.
  17. Have as many girl’s nights as possible – There’s something about a girl’s nights that make everything better. Whether it’s just having a glass of wine and watching the bachelor or actually going out and dancing the night away, you always know you’re going to have a good time.
  18. Be open to different opportunities, experiences, and adventures – 24 is a young age! I’m learning to do things I never thought I would or never thought I would have the chance to do.
  19. Take it one day at a time – and sometimes it’s literally one hour at a time.
  20. Learn to celebrate your mistakes – My friend Carley and I were just talking about this the other day. We are going to mess up (sometimes really badly) but beating yourself up about something that is already done makes no sense. So take it as a learning experience, figure out a solution and move on!
  21. Have a clean space – Your spaces reflect your current state of mind, make sure they are clean! If my apartment and my desk at work are a mess, usually I’m having a pretty hectic week.
  22. Don’t be scared to address things that are bothering you – addressing conflict is not the easiest thing to do but you feel so much better after getting it off of your chest.
  23. Embrace vulnerability – You may feel like Mr. Crabs from Spongebob when he lost his shell 😂but it’s a necessary part of life.
  24. TREAT YO SELF!

So basically 24 is all about living my best life lol! Over the past few years, I’ve let so many things bother and affect me. 24 is the year that it’s all about me. I’m refocusing on the things that are important to me, living my life unbothered, and enjoying every minute. I will forever think that your 20s are probably the most difficult and exciting decade of your life. You graduate college, you get your first job in your career, you move up the ladder, people get married and start families. We’re making memories, traveling, exploring,  and figuring out what we want in life. So don’t think of your mistakes or where you’re not, but what you’ve learned.
